Obituary for Charles A. Hayes
Charles A. Hayes, age 85, formerly of Middleburg, Ohio, and a resident of Summit Acres Nursing Home in Caldwell, Ohio, died Saturday afternoon (4/12/2003) at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center in Cambridge, Ohio. He was born 3/10/1918 in Noble County, Ohio a son of the late Columbus 'Tom' and Bertha McVay Hayes. He was a WWII Army Veteran having served in the Pacific Theater of Operations, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a member of Elba Community Church; the Dexter City American Legion and Sharon Lodge #136 Free and Accepted Masons in Sharon, Ohio. Charlie devoted his life to farming; was a former Jefferson Township Trustee and Noble County Commissioner and a retired employee of the Ohio Department of Transportation, having worked from the Macksburg Outpost. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Wilma N. Mallett Hayes, who died 5/18/2001; a brother Earl Hayes and 2 sisters Lucille Clark and Madge Morrison. Surviving are 1 son Ike (Ruth) Hayes of Caldwell, Ohio; 3 daughters Connie (Rod) Channell of Grove City, Ohio, Peggy (Jeff) Turner of Hilliard, Ohio and Virginia Rader Hayes of Columbus, Ohio; 9 grandchildren Trish, Alex & Audrey Hayes, Marsha (Greg) Andreason, Carla (Alex) Patton, Bryan & Denise Turner, Don & Art Rader; 1 great-grandaughter Alexis Cornely; 2 sisters Wilma 'Kim' Gildow and Irene Shilling; numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. Friends may call Tuesday (4/15/2003) from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM, at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, where Sharon Lodge will conduct masonic services at 6:30 PM. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday (4/16/2003) at 11 AM from the funeral home with the Rev. William Pickenpaugh officiating. Burial will follow at Ogle's Ridge Cemetery near Middleburg, Ohio. Caldwell Post #4721 VFW and Belle Valley Post #641 American Legion will conduct military graveside services. The family requests that memorials be made to the Elba Community Church.
