Obituary for Freddie Powell
Freddie Powell, age 91, of Caldwell, Ohio, died Tuesday, February 25, 2020, at Summit Acres Nursing Home under the care of Absolute Hospice in Caldwell. He was born July 11, 1928, near Quaker City, son of the late Francis and Hazel Eschbaugh Powell. He was raised in the Mt. Ephraim area, and he was a 1946 graduate of Sarahsville High School. He was a World War II Army Air Corp veteran, a sergeant who served with the occupation forces in the South Pacific from 1946-1949. He was stationed in the Philippines and Okinawa, Japan. Freddie retired following 44 years of service in the printing and newspaper industry. He started his career in 1951 at The Journal in Caldwell when he returned from the service. He was the pressroom foreman at the Times Recorder in Zanesville, and then purchased the Beverly Dispatch in 1963. He also served as press operator at Southeastern Printing in Cambridge, and in April, 1979, he became the general manager and part owner of The Journal Leader. He retired from The Journal on July 14, 1995.

Freddie was a member of the Caldwell Church of the Nazarene for over 50 years, a member of Olive Lodge #210, F&AM, Mt. Ephraim, and Valley of Cambridge, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, 32nd degree Mason, and Alladin Temple Shrine in Columbus. He was a member of the Noble County Community Improvement Corporation for 24 years, and a member of the Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees for 14 years. He served as a member of the Caldwell Village Council and was a member or the Noble Correctional Institution Site Committee. Later in life, he was employed as a realtor for Dave Anderson Realty and Ben Schafer Realty, both of Caldwell.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Warner, Edna Anderson, and Betty McVicker; and two brothers, Walter Powell and Donald Earl Powell.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Carole Joann Perkins, whom he married July 11, 1953; one son, Pastor John A. Powell, wife Belinda, and grandson Joshua A. Powell; two sisters, Sylvia Mendenhall of Canton and Josie Williams of Kennonsburg; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; cousins; and many special friends.

Friends may call Friday, February 28, 2020, from 2-8PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell, where a Masonic service will conclude visitation at 8PM. Visitation will continue Saturday, February 29th from 10AM-12PM at the Caldwell Church of the Nazarene, 6 Cumberland Street, Caldwell, where the funeral service will begin at 12PM with Pastor John Powell and Ken Perkins officiating. A veteran’s service will be observed by the Noble County Veterans Service Organizations, and burial will follow at Olive Cemetery.
