Obituary for Vernon Wilbur Slater
Vernon Wilbur Slater was born in Library, Pennsylvania, May 27, 1912. He is the son late Frederick W. and Clara Augenstein Slater. He was confirmed in the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Paris, Ohio; had attended St. John's Academy in Petersburg, West Virginia and graduated from Alliance High School in Alliance, Ohio. In 1937 he received a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Mt. Union College in Alliance, Ohio. During WWII he served as a Courier Officer in the South Pacific and Commanding Officer for the 14th Army Postal Unit in Guam. He received the American Campaign Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal and the Victory Medal. In 1945 he married Mary I. Brown and after leaving the military in 1949 he became a family farmer in Noble County, Ohio. When teachers were scarce he pitched in and helped out, later returning to his beloved farming. During his teaching career he attended three National Science Foundation Workshops at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Kent State University in Kent and Ohio University in Athens. In addition to his parents Vernon is preceded in death by one son Charles Robin Slater and 1 brother Robert J. Slater. Surviving are his wife of 60 years Mary I. Brown Slater; 2 sons George V. & Donald R. Slater, 1 daughter Clara Linda Slater all of Caldwell, Ohio; 1 brother Fred W. (Mary Davis) Slater of Mansfield, Ohio and Lady Lake, Florida; 1 sister Dorothy (Ralph) Cope of Freeberg, Ohio; 1 sister-in-law Peggy Lee Slater of Paris, Ohio; 3 granddaughters Stephanie Lynn Slater of Caldwell, Ohio, Alisa Dawn Slater and Janein Robin Slater of Columbus, Ohio; 1 great-grandaughter Isabel Quinby Fuller; 6 nephews, 2 nieces; numeroud grand nieces and grand nephews. No visitation will be observed. A memorial service will be held Saturday (4/26/2003) at 2:00 PM at the Caldwell United Methodist Church, 537 Main Street, Caldwell, Ohio 43724, with the Rev. Gary Fitzgerald officiating. McVay-Perkins Funeral Home in Caldwell has charge of arrangements.
