Obituary for Velta Christine Bates
Velta Christine Bates, age 92, of Caldwell, Ohio, died Friday, February 12, 2016, at Cedar Hill Care Center in Zanesville. She was born November 12, 1923, in Irwinton, Georgia, daughter of the late Allen C. and Narrie Stapleton Loyd. During World War II, she worked for a munitions factory in Georgia. Mrs. Bates was a homemaker, and she served as a poll worker for the Noble County Board of Elections. She was a member of the Caldwell United Methodist Church, and she loved sewing, quilting, crocheting, and cooking.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Donald E. Bates, whom she married June 23, 1946, and who died January 21, 2016; three sisters, Anna Laura Loyd, Gertrude Loyd, and Myrtle Hatfield; and three brothers, Allen C. Loyd, Jr., John Thomas Loyd, and Virgil Loyd.
Surviving are her children, Danny A. E. (Joan) Bates of Delaware, Dolly C. (Richard) Clark and Diane (Bruce) Kolopajlo, both of Zanesville, and Douglas J. (Dreama) Bates of Caldwell; one brother, Alton L. “Bo” (Annie) Loyd of Georgia; 8 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandson.
Friends may call Wednesday, February 17, 2016, from 11AM-1PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell, where the funeral service will follow visitation at 1PM with Pastor Jim Cooper officiating. Burial will follow at Olive Cemetery in Caldwell.
