Obituary for Susan Elizabeth Hyland
Susan Elizabeth Hyland, age 62, of Belle Valley, Ohio, died Saturday, June 20, 2015, in Pickerington. She was born May 30, 1953, in Akron, daughter of Lois M. Eldridge White of Cambridge and the late Charles R. White. She was a graduate of Crestview High School and Ashland College, having earned a Bachelor of Science in Art Education. She also completed her Master of Divinity from Ashland Theological Seminary, and her Ph.D. from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. She was an ordained minister with the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. Susan pastored at the Savannah Presbyterian Church in Savannah, Ohio, the Papago Park Brethren Church in Tempe, Arizona, the First Presbyterian Church in Caldwell, and the First Presbyterian Church in Senecaville, both of Ohio. She also served as adjunct professor of Religious Studies at Muskingum University in New Concord. She was a member of the Muskingum Valley Presbytery in New Philadelphia, and she taught Adult Basic and Literacy Education classes in Noble County for ten years. She loved art, and enjoyed acrylic painting and conducting painting parties. She operated Hyland’s Creative Cottage in Belle Valley with her daughter, Caitlin. She also loved the outdoors, especially gardening, landscaping, and flowers. Susan was always helping and serving others with a generous and open heart, and her faith was always evident. Her life was a living testimony to her faith.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Ken D. Hyland, whom she married March 15, 1980; three children, Brendon M. (Kala) Hyland of Byesville, Caitlin E. Hyland of Belle Valley, and Ariel M. (John) Groom of Pickerington; one sister, Shelia (Michael) Gleason of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Thursday, June 25, 2015, from 2-4 and 6-8PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell. A memorial service will be observed Friday, June 26th at 11AM at First Presbyterian Church, 158 High Street in Senecaville.
