Obituary for Ruben W. Schafer
Ruben W. Schafer, age 85, of Caldwell, Ohio, died Thursday, April 10, 2014, at his home. He was born May 9, 1928, in Noble County, son of the late Clement and Margaret Schockling Schafer. He was a United States Army veteran, and he was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church in Caldwell and the Father Klueber Council #2565 Knights of Columbus in Caldwell for over 50 years. In 1948, he began work as a contractor, and later he founded C&S Plumbing in Caldwell, which he owned and operated for many years. He also founded Caldwell Redi-Mix. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, deer hunting and he enjoyed working, especially on his farm. One of Ruben’s favorite sayings was, “It is an honor to do work.”
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three sons, Tommy, Bobby and Eddy Schafer; and two brothers, Vincent and Ralph Schafer.
Surviving are his wife Delores F. Schell Schafer, whom he married in 1950; three daughters, Joann M. (Tony) Steed, Kay Schafer, and Connie S. (Gary) Clark, all of Caldwell; one sister, Dorothy Mae (Bernie) Riski of Caldwell; two sisters-in-law, Agatha Schafer of Senecaville and Julie Ann Schafer of Canton; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his card playing gang.
Friends may call Sunday, April 13, 2014, from 4-6PM and Monday, April 14, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell, where a vigil service will be observed at Monday at 7:30PM, followed by the Knights of Columbus Rosary. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be observed Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at 10AM at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fulda with Rev. Fr. Wayne Morris as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery.
