Obituary for Robert Glen Augenstein
Robert G. Augenstein, age 85, of Caldwell, died Wednesday, September 6, 2006, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. He was born August 31, 1921, near Dungannon, Jackson Twp., Noble County, Ohio, son of the late Carl and Hallie Dovenbarger Augenstein. He was a 1939 graduate of Dexter City High School, and a United States Army veteran. He joined the Army in September, 1942, and became a mechanic with the Flying Tigers Division, serving over two years in China, India, and Burma, where he worked on the Burma Highway Road. In 1946, he opened the Stone Creek Garage and Filling Station. In 1949, he sold the filling station and moved back to Noble County and became a mechanic for the former Fleeman Pontiac-Ford Garage at Beverly and the Ford Garage at Caldwell, as well as the former Quaker State Station in Caldwell. Mr. Augenstein owned and operated a family farm near Dudley for many years, and he also owned and operated Bob Augenstein Garage in Caldwell for many years. He was a Protestant by faith, and an avid supporter of the fall Soakum Festival at the Noble County Fairgrounds where he made corn brooms. He was a member of the Old Mens Club, which meets in Fred Tilton's log cabin, and he was a member of the Noble County Historical Society. Mr. Augenstein loved to work with old tools and wood, and he enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping, and hunting ginseng. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Gore Augenstein, who died in 1983; four sisters, Letha Reed, Irene Beardsley, Martha Augenstein, and Betty Mincks; one brother, Paul Augenstein; and 1 great-granddaughter, Molly Beth Adams. Surviving are his wife, Eva Virginia Augenstein, whom he married August 28, 1983; one step-daughter, Mrs. Dave (Karen) Archer of Caldwell; one step-son, Jerry (Mary) Bever of Caldwell; two sisters, Beulah Faye Augenstein of Marietta and Mrs. Amos (Mary Kathryn) Wagner of Beverly; one brother, Raymond (Dorothy) Augenstein of Shelby; 5 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, September 9, 2006, at 2PM at Crooked Tree Cemetery with Pastor Bill Pickenpaugh officiating. Military services will be conducted by the Noble County Veterans Services Organization. Memorials may be made to the Noble County Historical Society or the Soakum Festival in care of P.O.
