Obituary for Rev. Helen Lucille Lewis
Rev. Helen Lucille Pennock Lewis, age 99, of Caldwell, Ohio, died Thursday, April 7, 2022, at Altercare Summit Acres. She was born August 11, 1922, in Center Twp., Morgan County, Ohio, daughter of the late Harry and Marie Burns Pennock. Helen was a graduate of Beverly High School, Malone University in Canton, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biblical Studies, and Ashland Theological Seminary where she earned a Master of Divinity degree. She was an ordained elder of the United Methodist Church and a member of the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. She served as pastor at Ragan’s Chapel, Bells United Methodist Church, Middleburg United Methodist Church, East Union United Methodist Church, and the Sharon Presbyterian Church in Noble County, the Cherry Valley and Williamsfield United Methodist Church in Ashtabula County, where she was the director of the Dynamic Rural Ministry from 1985 to 1993, and the Fresno United Methodist Church. She was a former president for the East Ohio Conference and Country Ministry and selected to be a member of Who’s Who Among Colleges and Universities through Malone University. She was a volunteer chaplain for Coshocton County Hospital. She was a member of the Rural Chaplains, an international ministry. Helen went on various mission trips, including to Haiti, Russia, and various places in the United States. She enjoyed traveling, and visited Europe, the Middle East, including Israel, Mount Sinai, and the travels of the apostle Paul in Asia. She was active in ministry, Bible study, and communion services at Altercare Summit Acres.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Lewis, whom she married in 1940 and who died in 1971; one son, David Robert Lewis, who died in 2002; four brothers, Robert, Russell, Francis, and Dean Pennock; her father and mother-in-law, Howard and Gladys Lewis; and her sisters-in-law, Eleanor Pennock, Norma Leget, and Faye Combs.
Surviving are two sons, Roger Lee (Susan) Lewis of Dublin and Gerald Edward Lewis of Caldwell; her grandchildren, Stephen (Tammy) Lewis of Cutler, Scott Lewis of Belpre, Jodi Lewis Dearien of Davisville, West Virginia, Stephanie (Chad) Rine of Frazeysburg, and Kristen Lewis of Urbana; her great-grandchildren, Abbie and Tyler Dearien, Bridget and Olesya Lewis, Brooklyn Owens, Madalene, Haley, and Hope Lewis, Aaron Lance, and Julie and Garrett Rine; a great-great-granddaughter, Klara Owens; daughters-in-law, Judy Lewis, Linda Lewis, and Patty Lewis; sisters-in-law, Arlene Pennock, Mary Lou Pennock and Edna Phillis; and her foster family, David Lepard and family.
Friends may call Tuesday, April 12, 2022, from 4-8PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell. The funeral service will be observed Wednesday, April 13th at 11AM at the First Presbyterian Church, 532 North Street, Caldwell, with Ken Perkins officiating. Burial will follow at Smith’s Chapel Cemetery in Hackney.
