Obituary for Matthew Baldwin Crum
Matthew Baldwin Crum, age 96, of Caldwell, Ohio, died Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Summit Acres Nursing Home in Caldwell. He was born November 5, 1915, in Virginia, son of the late William Henry and Nora Estelle Witt Crum. He was a United States Army veteran who served in the Pacific Theater, and for which he served as an infantry sharpshooter. As a young man, he worked in cotton mills and CCC camps in Virginia, and later he was employed by the Canton City Street Department. He retired from Diamond Portland Cement in Middle Branch. Mr. Crum was a member of the Caldwell Church of the Nazarene, and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Britain, Augusta Maxey, and Gracie King; three brothers, Mark, Luke, and Thomas Crum; and one step-brother, Silas Acts Crum. Surviving are his wife, Verna Marie Fogle Crum, whom he married December 12, 1963; his children, Teresa A. (Dave) Long of Caldwell, Loriece E. Crum of Cumberland, Joan Rogers of Greensboro, North Carolina, Bobby A. Crum and James P. Crum, both of Martinsville, Virginia, and Vivian Crum Duke of Danville, Virginia; one step-daughter, Dianna L. Graybill of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; one sister, Martha (Don) Goffry of Canton; one brother, John (Ruby) Crum of Greensboro, North Carolina; two step-sisters, Virginia Vasquez and Loretta Hoskins, both of Chatham, Virginia; five grandchildren, Dawna (Levi) Hartman, Korinna Long, Tammy Graybill, Terry Graybill, and Joseph Duke; 5 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends may call Tuesday, March 13, 2012, from 2-4 and 6-8PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell, where the funerals service will be observed Wednesday, March 14th at 11AM with Pastor John Powell officiating. A veteran's graveside service will be observed at Dudley Cemetery conducted by the Noble County Veteran Service Organizations.
