Obituary for Mary Jane Bergman

Mary Jane Faw Bergman, RN-C, 79, of Park Village Health Care Center, formerly of New Philadelphia, Ohio, and Largo, Florida, died Saturday, July 1, 2006. Mary Jane was born in Imperial, Pennsylvania, on October 21, 1926, the daughter of the late Hilary A. and Rachel Decker Faw. Survivors include four sons: William Gregory (Greg) Bergman and wife Joan of Quaker City, Ohio, John Brace Bergman of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Edward Gene Bergman and his wife La-Nita of Martin, Tennessee, and David Ray Bergman and his wife Linda of Quaker City, Ohio; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Bernadine Faw Arnold of Frederick, Maryland; one brother, John Edward Faw and his wife Patricia of Cockeysville, Maryland; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. Mary Jane graduated from the School of Nursing at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, Maryland, in 1947, and was certified for excellence in Community Health Nursing in 1983. She worked from 1947 to 1972 at Union Hospital in Dover, Ohio, in various positions, including charge nurse of the recovery room, ICU, and surgical unit. She was then appointed Health Commissioner of the New Philadelphia City Health Department where she remained until 1980. She received a commendation from the Ohio House of Representatives as 'one of Ohio's finest Citizens.' After her retirement as Health Commissioner, she resumed her career as a Senior Community Health Nurse for Pinellas County, Florida, until illness necessitated her return to Ohio to be near her family. Mary Jane was active in numerous nursing and community associations, and was a member of the Fortnightly Music Club from 1950 to 1970. She was also a choir member and soloist for the First United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia from 1948 to 1975. A memorial service will be held Monday, July 3, 2006, at 11AM at First United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia, Ohio.
