Obituary for Mary Isabel Brown Slater
Mary Isabel Brown Slater, age 92, of Caldwell, Ohio, died Tuesday, November 4, 2008, at her home. She was born January 5, 1916, in Pataskala, Ohio, daughter of the late George Washington and Lillian Barbara Swank Brown. She was a 1933 graduate of Newark High School, and a 1937 graduate of Denison University in Granville, from which she earned a bachelor of arts degree in Latin and mathematics. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She was a mathematics teacher in Magnolia, Dexter City, and Caldwell, and she retired from Shenandoah High School in Sarahsville. She was member of Eta Sigma Phi classical language honorary and Alpha Xi Delta mathematics honorary. She was a member of the Caldwell United Methodist Church, Amazon Chapter #30, OES, the Noble County Farm Bureau, RIPPLES Cancer Support Group of Noble County, the Noble County Retired Teachers Association, the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, and the Noble County Historical Society, for which she served as treasurer for many years. Mary was gifted as a teacher and touched so many lives in that manner. Everywhere she went in the community, former students would approach her to tell her what an excellent teacher she had been and how well she had prepared them for the future. As a mother, she wanted her children to develop interests and values that would make them good citizens of the world, and to follow in her footsteps, making a genuine contribution towards the betterment of life on earth. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Wilbur Slater, whom she married August 29, 1942, and who died April 16, 2003; one son, Charles Robin Slater; one sister, Martha Lucille Braden; and one brother, James Addison Brown. Surviving are her children, George Vernon Slater, Clara Linda Slater, and Donald Richard (Karen) Slater, all of Caldwell; 3 granddaughters; 2 great-granddaughters; and one niece. At Mrs. Slater's request, no visitation or service will be observed. Inurnment will be at Olive Cemetery, Caldwell. Memorial contributions may be made to the RIPPLES Cancer Support Group.
