Obituary for Lorin G. Sanford
Lorin G. Sanford, of Caldwell, Ohio, died June 21, 2019, peacefully at home. He was born October 18, 1924, at Pleasantville, Ohio, the oldest son of George Chilcote and Beatrice Berry Sanford. He was a 1942 graduate of Sarahsville High School, and a 1952 and 1966 graduate of the Animal Science Department at The Ohio State University. He was a member of the 1952 collegiate Livestock Judging Team, and a life member of the OSU Alumni Association. He was a member of Gamma Sigma Delta, the honor society of agriculture of The Ohio State University. He was a member of the U.S. Naval Air Corps from 1944 to 1946, learning to fly fighter planes. He taught vocational agriculture for three years at Caldwell High School to veterans of World War II and also taught science courses at Sarahsville High School for one half year. He was the Secretary-Fieldman for the Buckeye Polled Hereford Association from 1955 to 1965, during which he managed cattle shows and sales in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. He judged numerous beef cattle shows in Ohio and West Virginia. In 1966, he was employed by The Ohio State University as District Animal Science Specialist where he conducted numerous Extension Programs and managed the Ohio Bull Test. He retired in 1987 as an Associate Professor of the Extension and Animal Science Departments of Ohio State. After retirement, he continued to raise beef cattle and operate the home farm, which in 2019 has been honored as a Bicentennial farm in the state of Ohio. He was a member of several livestock and agriculture organizations. He received his 60th year pin from the Sharon Masonic Lodge in 2006. He was a member of Caldwell United Methodist Church.
Lorin had a sincere interest in people, asking questions about their lives and passions until he knew them well. His love of poker led to many family events teaching the next generations to play blackjack and 5-card stud. He played trumpet in high school and loved showing his grandsons how to play the mouth harp. He loved traveling to Rose Bowls, Ireland, France, and to national cattle shows and Extension conventions. His favorite sight was watching newborn calves jump around in the meadows.
He leaves his wife, Eleanor Everly Sanford, whom he married December 22, 1946; one daughter, Ann Sanford of Toledo; and two grandsons, Sanford Everly Bennett (Christine Fair) of Toledo, and Robert Russell Bennett of Austin, Texas; and he leaves a brother, Donald (Patricia) Sanford, along with many nieces, nephew, and great-nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister, Irma Sanford Wheeler.
