Jon N. Bates, age 74, of Caldwell, Ohio, died Sunday, February 9, 2020, at Genesis Hospital in Zanesville. He was born June 17, 1945, in Summerfield, son of the late Harry and Madge Compton Bates. He was a 1963 graduate of Summerfield High School. Jon was employed by the Ohio Department of Transportation in grading, and then he worked for Monroe Grading. In 1998, he retired from Central Ohio Coal Company, and later retired from AEP. Jon owned and operated The Tracks Drive Thru in Caldwell, and he worked in construction and home improvements for a time. From 2015-2019, he served as mayor for the Village of Caldwell. He was Christian by faith, and he was a member of the McDonald’s Breakfast Club. Jon was an avid NASCAR fan and he enjoyed working and tinkering on things. He enjoyed camping and traveling, especially taking trips to Myrtle Beach. He was devoted to his family and the community.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Archer Bates, whom he married May 2, 1965; his children, Misty D. (Matt) Wyscarver and Jarrod J. Bates, all of Caldwell; four grandchildren, Bayleigh Janusik (Mike Vidovich) of Brooklyn, New York, Graham (Katie) Janusik of Cambridge, Mason S. Janusik of Gainesville, Georgia, and Nataleigh R. Janusik of Caldwell; his siblings, Gloria Keylor of Roseville and Franklin Bates of Apple Valley; a sister-in-law, Linda Archer Clark of Caldwell; and a brother-in-law, Dale (Monica) Archer of Heron, Montana.
A private family service will be observed at Olive Cemetery in Caldwell. McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell, is caring for the family.
