James R. Rayner, age 75, of CR 59 Cumberland, Ohio, died Saturday morning (12/28/2002) at Southeast Med in Cambridge, Ohio. He was born 10/31/1927 in Ava, Ohio a son of the late Charles Homer & Etta Lyons Rayner. He was a WWII Army Veteran, a member of Belle Valley American Legion Post #641 and had attended the Ava Free Methodist Church. He had owned and operated the James R. Rayner Garage & Body Shop in Ava for 24 years. Jim was active in community affairs having served as Noble County Commissioner for 20 years, was a former member of the Noble Local Board of Education, the Noble County Fairboard and the Shenandoah Athletic Boosters Club. He was also a member of the Buckeye State Sheriff's Association. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by 2 brothers Martin Luther 'Boots' Rayner and Hansome Rayner and 2 sisters Sarah S. Hurst and Hazel McCune. Surviving are his wife Evelyn J. Bond Rayner, whom he married in 1946; a son James M. (Sandy) Rayner of Caldwell; 2 daughters Kim (Gary) Thompson of Caldwell and Rhonda (Rick) Gregg of Cumberland; a brother John D. (Betty) Rayner of Cumberland; a sister Beulah F. Rossiter Anderson of Caldwell; 7 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call Monday (12/30/2002) from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home in Caldwell where services will be held on Tuesday (12/31/2002) at 11:00 AM with Pastor Jim Garrett officiating. Burial will follow at Halley's Ridge Cemetery near Ava, Ohio. Caldwell Post #4721 VFW and Belle Valley Post #641 American Legion will conduct military graveside services. The family requests that memorials be made to the American Heart Association.
