Obituary for Irma Irene Kappel Smith
Irma Irene Kappel Smith, age 90, of Caldwell, Ohio, died Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at Summit Acres Nursing Home in Caldwell. She was born August 8, 1925, in Noble County, daughter of the late Loen Bell and Sadie Jane Willey Kappel. She was a 1942 graduate of Forest Grove High School, and she worked in Washington, D. C. for the War Department, compiling records for World War II military personnel. Along with her late husband, she owned and operated a family farm in Rich Valley. Mrs. Smith was a long time member of the Caldwell Free Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and a steward. She was a beautiful singer and could remember the words to many songs. She loved watching birds and enjoyed mimicking them. She loved her ten children and their spouses, and she treasured her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She leaves a legacy of love, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the honor to know her.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Victor Morris Smith, whom she married April 26, 1946, and who died September 18, 1981; one grandson, Matthew A. Smith; and two brothers, Wayne and George Kappel.

Surviving are ten children: her daughters, Shirley Patterson of Caldwell, Janie (Kevin) Madden of Oklahoma, and Vickie (Rick) Snyder of Caldwell; and her sons, Leland (Connie) Smith of Texas, Paul Smith of Caldwell, Larry (Susan) Smith of Cambridge, Dean (Patricia) Smith of Louisville, William Dwain (Ruth) Smith of Caldwell, Darrel (Shirley) Smith of Caldwell, and David Smith of Caldwell; her grandchildren, Tami Birdsall of Florida, Lori (Josh) Bernethy of Texas, Darlene (Mark) Roe of Senecaville, Cheryl (Nathan) Murphy of Wooster, Brenda Smith of Fresno, Michael Smith of Florida, Jeffrey Smith of Nashport, Jessica (Mike) Roberts of Florida, Brian (Jana) Smith of Caldwell, Brent (Tina) Smith of Caldwell, Mark (Kellie) Smith of California, Shawn (Tara) Madden of South Carolina, Travis (Whitney) Snyder of Caldwell, Justin Snyder of Wilmington, Derick Snyder of Caldwell, Darren Smith of Caldwell, and Tyler (Amy) Smith, serving with the United States Navy in Norfolk, Virginia; three sisters, Doris Smith of Caldwell, Marjorie Addlespurger, of Macksburg, and Virginia Wilson of Zanesville; and she is survived by many great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Thursday, June 30, 2016, from 2-8PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell, where the funeral service will be observed Friday, July 1st at 10AM with Pastor Dave Wells and Pastor Randy Savage officiating. Burial will follow at Dudley Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Caldwell Free Methodist Church, 221 Cumberland Street, Caldwell, Ohio, 43724.
