Obituary for Helen L. Davis
Helen Louise Davis, age 97, of Sarahsville, Ohio, died peacefully Thursday, February 17, 2022, at her home. She was born April 14, 1924, at her family’s farm near Pleasant City, daughter of the late Dewey A. and Samantha Gladys Danford Groves. Helen was a 1941 graduate of Sarahsville High School, where she played the piccolo in the band and was a high school cheerleader. She was employed by Dr. Fred Cox and Dr. E. G. Ditch in Caldwell for 30 years and later clerked for Producers Livestock Sale. She was a member of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church near Pleasant City and its Ladies Aid Society and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. She also served as a 4-H advisor. Helen was the oldest resident of Sarahsville and continued to maintain her family’s farm, which has been honored as a Century Farm. She hosted many family dinners for every holiday and was an exceptional cook and baker. She baked and decorated elaborate wedding cakes and was an excellent pie baker who won many prizes and exhibited at the Ohio State Fair. She was always preparing food to take to others. She enjoyed vegetable gardening and flower gardening, even into her 90s. Helen hand quilted and embroidered many quilts and knitted many dishcloths that she shared with many people. She crocheted many items and gave blankets as baby gifts. She also enjoyed collecting antiques and flue covers. She played the piano by ear and had a beautiful singing voice, and she loved to go to Amish country with her friends. Helen loved her grandchildren and her family.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Carl M. “Dick” Davis, whom she married December 24, 1941, and who died July 20, 2004; two sisters, Mary E. Groves and Gail Rutherford; her son-in-law, Jack Barnett; and a foster daughter, Betty Franklin.

Surviving are her children, Gary W. (Carol) Davis of Jerusalem and M. Jane Barnett of Caldwell; 6 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

At Helen’s request, a private family service will be observed and burial will take place at Village View Cemetery in Sarahsville. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt.
