Obituary for Harry 'Junior' Mettler
Harry “Junior” Mettler, age 83, of Dexter City, Ohio, passed peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, February 05, 2013, after many years battling heart disease and a near life-ending burn in 2011. Harry was born February 11, 1929, in Ringold, Ohio, son of the late Harry and Gladys Clendenning Mettler, Sr. He drove truck for farmers in Circleville and surrounding areas from the 1940s through the 1960s. In 1963, he met & married his sweetheart, Shirley Mae DeLancey of Caldwell. Harry and his wife settled in Keithtown in Noble County, where they bought a farm and raised their three sons over the next 50 years. Harry was a former truck driver for Lamp Sawmill, Greenland Petroleum, and other local companies for many years, and tended bar for The Hideout. He also transported many students and band members as a bus driver for Caldwell Schools before his health forced him to retire. Harry was a member of the Keith United Methodist Church. Harry enjoyed fishing, hunting mushrooms, gardening, and farming, but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his boys and his grandchildren. Harry was also his grandkids’ biggest fan at many Caldwell Redskin sporting events, fair and 4H activities, and anything they participated in. Harry enjoyed taking his family on trips across many states in their renovated blue bus camper, and taking vacations with them. In his retirement, Harry enjoyed spending time with his “Sugar-Babe” and devoted wife Shirley, and puttering around the farm with his chickens and their beloved dogs, JR and Odie. In addition to his parents, he preceded in death by three brothers, Howard, Harold and Charles (Bussy); three sisters Hazel, Ivy, and Ethel, and one sister-in-law, Marylin DeLancey. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Mae DeLancey Mettler; his sons, Aaron Keith (Fonda Garvin) Mettler, of Dexter City, Curtis Wade (Julie Neff) Mettler of Caldwell, and Myron Dale (Angela Harriman) Mettler of Dexter City; his grandchildren and their families, Amanda Sue (Lee Orahood), Joshua Keith, Austin Aaron, Travis Wade, Jessica Anne (fiancé Jeremy Haas), Myra Jean (Michael Guy II), Andrea Dayle, and Brittany Eugenia. Harry was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Macey Sue Mettler and her mother, Jessica Franklin, and Mason Allan Guy. Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Clela DeLancey; his siblings, Gladys (Polly) and Bill Caudill of Circleville, Sissy (Betty) Ramsey, Roy (Dorothy), Jerry (Ruth), Ronnie, and Boyd; his wife’s sisters and their families, Doris (Robert) Buckley, and Marsha (Kevin) Greenhoe; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends may call Thursday, February 7, 2013, from 2-4 and 6-8PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell, where the funeral service will be observed Friday February 8, 2013, at 1PM with Rev. Jim Porter officiating. Burial will follow at Keith Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Harry’s memory may be made to Hospice of Guernsey, P.O. Box 1163, Cambridge, Ohio, 43725; or to the Keith or Dungannon United Methodist Churches.
