Obituary for Glenn Bernard Slay
Glenn Bernard Slay, age 88, a resident of Caldwell since 1947, died Thursday, November 20, 2008, at UPMC Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was born November 15, 1920, in St. Clairsville, Ohio, son of the late Clifford W. and Eula M. Taylor Slay. He was a graduate of St. Clairsville High School. Mr. Slay retired from Central Ohio Coal Company of Cumberland, where he was a foreman and a heavy equipment operator. He was involved for many years with the Noble County 4-H Program, and he was a member of the Caldwell United Methodist Church. In 2008, he was recognized for over 50 years of service as a volunteer fireman with the Adena and Caldwell Volunteer Fire Departments. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Willa Dee Williamson Slay, whom he married in 1940 and who died in 2004; two sisters; two brothers-in-law; one brother; and one daughter-in-law. Surviving are three sons, Glenn B. Slay, Jr. of Missoula, Montana; Clifford D. (Brenda) Slay of Powell, Ohio and George (JoAnn) Slay of Zephyrhills, Florida; two daughters, Mary Jane (Kenneth) Berchak of Delaware, Ohio and Michal June Young of Zanesville; one sister-in-law, Claire Slay of Weirton, West Virginia; 14 grandchildren Walter (Teri) Berchak, Kathryn (Michael) Cline, Linette (Mark) Lahan, Michael Berchak, Lysa (Steve) Schilthelm, Raquel Slay, Tony (Amy) Young, Dawn (Carl) Downour, Kristina (Eric) Westfall, Jeremy (Kandi) Slay, David (Shana) Keiser, Geo Slay, Christopher ?Dewey? Slay and Dominic Slay; 16 great-grandchildren, Erin and Patricia Lahan, Aric and Drew Schilthelm, Ethan, Benjamin and Sophie Young, Josef, Allie and Tori Downour, Brandon Starner, Jenna Westfall, Kaden and Kaleb Nutter, Sydney and Emma Slay; many nieces, nephews and many friends, particularly members of the Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department. No visitation will be observed. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2008, at 2PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department, 215 West Street, Caldwell, Ohio, 43724.
