Obituary for Gilbert J. Crock
Gilbert J. Crock, age 85, of Caldwell, Ohio, died Sunday, June 18, 2006, at Summit Acres Nursing Home, Caldwell. He was born May 13, 1921, in Elk Twp., Noble County, Ohio, son of the late Louis and Louisa Scheer Crock. He was a WWII Army veteran, having served from September 29, 1942, in North Africa and Italy. He was decorated with the Good Conduct European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five bronze stars. He was honorably discharged on October 13, 1945. Mr. Crock worked briefly at Remington Rand in Marietta and Moscrip Mining Corporation near Belle Valley, where he was seriously injured on March 13, 1950, when a coal truck backed over him in a coal pit. He spent nearly a year in St. Francis Hospital recovering. Following his recovery, he became a self-employed painter, working occasionally with the late Branson Van Fleet. He was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church, Caldwell, where he served as an usher for many years. Mr. Crock enjoyed his hound dogs, coon hunting, and playing cards with his many friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Belle Teeters Crock, whom he married July 17, 1947, and who died November 16, 2004; three brothers, Lawrence and Paul Crock, and an infant brother; and three sisters, Grace, Pearl, and Mary. Surviving are two sons, Mark (Janice) Crock of Mason, Ohio, and Christopher (Regina) Crock of Caldwell; two grandsons, Johnathan (Iwona) Crock of Washington, D.C. and Benjamin Crock of Mason; and several nieces and nephews. Friends were received Tuesday, June 20, 2006, from 2-4 and 6-8PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, Caldwell. Funeral Liturgy with Mass was celebrated Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at 10:30AM at St. Stephen Catholic Church, Caldwell, with Father Dale Tornes as celebrant. Burial was at Sharon Cemetery, Sharon, with military graveside services conducted by the Noble County Veterans Service Organization.
