Obituary for Erma "Ann" Sarkady Van Scyoc
Erma “Ann” Sarkady Van Scyoc, 88 years old, received her heavenly reward on Sunday, December 8, 2019. She was born December 9, 1930, in Logan County, West Virginia, daughter of Zigmund and Helen Pleasnick Sarkady. She was salutatorian of the class of 1949 at Barnesville High School. She graduated cum laude from Ohio University in 1969 with a degree in education and taught kindergarten for 20 years for Caldwell Exempted Village Schools. She married her high school sweetheart, Harold Van Scyoc, on October 1, 1950, and were together for 60 years. After they both retired in 1991, they enjoyed 20 years of travelling in their motor home, making many friends in several states.
Ann was a 45-year member of the Center Free Methodist Church in Sarahsville, where she was on the Board of Stewards, sang in the choir, and taught in Vacation Bible School and the Wednesday evening Joybells. She was very involved in missions, going on several trips, including a mission outreach in Missouri and a mission trip to the island of Nevis in the Caribbean. During the mid-1960s, while operating a dairy farm, Ann and her husband also ran the Beaver Valley Vacation Farm. She enjoyed square dancing with her husband, reading, crocheting, gardening, baking, and cooking for her family, and she especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. She will be remembered most for being a prayer warrior on behalf of her family, friends, and others. She lovingly lived her faith for others to witness. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Harold Van Scyoc, who died May 15, 2011; her son, Thomas William Van Scyoc, who died September 19, 2017; one sister, Kathleen Sarkady, who died February 13, 2011; and one brother, Sigmund Sarkady, who died May 1, 2014.
Surviving are her son, Martin L. Van Scyoc and wife Cindy of Sarahsville; her daughter-in-law, Debbie Van Scyoc of Gastonia, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Amanda (Tyler) DeVolld, Jared Van Scyoc, Andrea (Stephen) Hannum, and Stephen (Tatiana) Van Scyoc; six great-grandchildren, Traxen, Haisley, and Tayten DeVolld and Wesley and Alek Van Scyoc, and Stetson Hannum; a sister-in-law, Lois Van Scyoc of Barnesville; and several cousins and friends, including Jody and Mary Cox and Shirley Mandley.
Friends may call Friday, December 13, 2019, from 5-8PM and Saturday, December 14th from 10-11AM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell. The funeral service will follow visitation Saturday at 11AM with Ken Perkins officiating. A light luncheon will follow the service at the funeral home before processing to Mt. Hope Cemetery in Hendrysburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ava Free Methodist Church, P.O. Box 91, Ava, Ohio, 43711.
