Obituary for Elma M. Howiler
Elma M. Howiler, age 91, of Caldwell, Ohio, died Tuesday, February 16, 2021, at her home. She was born August 14, 1929, in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Charles and Alice Gaiser Bowser. Elma was a 1948 graduate of Ludlow Local High School. She was a beloved mother and homemaker who babysat from her home. She volunteered at The Samaritan House in Caldwell for over 30 years. She was a founding member of Faith Baptist Church in Belle Valley, where she was a member of the Willow Tree Widows Group, and where she formerly taught Sunday School and served as the church secretary. She was devoted to her Christian faith and to her family. She enjoyed crocheting.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, James Otis “Jim” Howiler, whom she married December 17, 1949, and who died May 23, 1997; one son, James Michael “Mike” Howiler, who died December 19, 2019; seven sisters; and four brothers.
Surviving are two sisters, Jean (Bradley) Alloway and Joan (Dutch) Rinard, all of Marietta; 3 grandchildren, Kristi A. (Carl) Myers, Jamie L. (Brad) Hamby, and Stephanie M. Howiler (Darrell D. Steward); 4 great-grandchildren, Melody Howiler, Briawna Stalnaker, Ethan Lahmers, and Griffin Hamby; a daughter-in-law, Jeannette L. Howiler of Caldwell; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Thursday, February 18, 2021, from 1-3PM at Faith Baptist Church, 200 Grove Road, Belle Valley, where the funeral service will follow visitation at 3PM with Pastor Larry Copley officiating. Burial will follow at Olive Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to The Samaritan House, 307 Main Street, Caldwell, Ohio, 43724. Guests are required to wear masks and practice social distancing as required by the state of Ohio. McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell, is caring for the family.
