Obituary for Dorothy Mae "Dottie" Perkins
Dorothy Mae “Dottie” Perkins, age 100, of Ava, Ohio, died Sunday, May 5, 2019, at Summit Acres Nursing Home in Caldwell. She was born October 30, 1918, in Noble County, daughter of the late Robert Johnson and Ethel Ball Stiers, and step-father, the late Wilbur Stiers. She was a 1937 graduate of Belle Valley High School. Dottie was a homemaker, and she also cleaned homes and served as a substitute cook for Belle Valley Elementary School. She was a member of the Ava Free Methodist Church for many years, where she served as treasurer and Sunday School teacher, and she was also a member of the Noble County Homemakers Club. She served as a poll worker for the Noble County Board of Elections for over 40 years, and she also served as a census taker for Ava in 1960. Dottie loved to sit on her front porch swing. She loved crocheting, knitting, plastic canvas crafting, listening to gospel music, and reading, especially her Bible and Our Daily Bread. She was a devoted Christian mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
In addition to her parents and step-father, she is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence E. “Bud” Perkins, whom she married May 17, 1947, and who died June 5, 1987; three daughters, Twila M. Wheeler, Marlene J. Teters, and infant daughter Delores Perkins; one grandson, Tim Wheeler; and one daughter-in-law, Darla Jean Perkins.
Surviving are her children, Fred P. (Sandra) Perkins of New Johnsonville, Tennesee, James W. Perkins of Ava, and Edwin D. (Yvonne) Perkins of Pleasant City; a son-in-law, Robert Wheeler of Cambridge; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call Tuesday, May 7, 2019, from 4-8PM and Wednesday, May 8th from 10AM-11AM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell, where the funeral service will follow visitation Wednesday at 11AM with Pastor Rodney Reeves and Pastor Ken Harper officiating. Burial will follow at Halley’s Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ava Free Methodist Church, P.O. Box 91, Ava, Ohio, 43711.
