Obituary for Donald Edward Bates
Donald Edward Bates, age 89, of Caldwell, Ohio, died Thursday, January 21, 2016, at his home. He was born June 16, 1926, in Zanesville, son of the late Andrew E. and Ida Nondis Mendenhall Bates. He was a 1944 graduate of Summerfield High School, and he was a World War II veteran, having served in the Army Infantry from September 16, 1944-July 23, 1946. He was employed as a lead machinist for the former Glacier Vandervell plant in Caldwell, having retired in 1988. Mr. Bates was a member of the Caldwell United Methodist Church, and he was actively involved with Boy Scouts, having served as an assistant scout master for Caldwell Troop #501, and as a member of the executive board for the Muskingum Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
Surviving are his wife, Velta C. Loyd Bates, whom he married June 23, 1946; his children, Danny A. E. (Joan) Bates of Delaware, Dolly C. (Richard) Clark and Diane (Bruce) Kolopajlo, both of Zanesville, and Douglas J. (Dreama) Bates of Caldwell; two sisters, Annabelle Archer of Cottonwood, Arizona, and Rena E. Young of Caldwell; 8 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandson.
Friends may call Tuesday, January 26, 2016, from 4-7PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell, where the funeral service will be observed Wednesday, January 27th at 2PM with Pastor Jim Cooper officiating. A veteran’s graveside service will follow at Olive Cemetery conducted by the Noble County Veteran Service Organizations.
