Obituary for Dewey Edwin Caldwell
Dewey Edwin Caldwell, age 88, of Caldwell, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at Genesis Hospital in Zanesville surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 29, 1928, in Brookfield Twp., Noble County, near Renrock, son of the late Dewey Armstrong and Stella Lucinda Brown Caldwell. He was a 1946 graduate of Belle Valley High School, and also in 1946, he became employed by Central Ohio Railroad as a track layer. In 1949, he began working for the Ohio Department of Transportation as a grader operator. In 1954, he went to work for the Central Ohio Coal Company as an equipment operator, retiring as a shovel operator in 1990 following 36 years of service. He received an award in 1985 for working 30 years without a lost time accident. Mr. Caldwell owned and operated Quaker State Service Station in Caldwell from 1959-1960. He served as an insurance agent for Patron’s Buckeye Mutual Insurance Company for 40 years, during which time he served as President of the Board of Directors. In 1972-1973, he served as a Noble County Deputy Sheriff. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and the Noble County Democratic Central Committee. He was former assistant chief for the Belle Valley Fire Department, and he was a member on the board of the Noble County Water Authority, where he was instrumental in water line development for Noble County. He was a former member of the Noble County Fair Board. Mr. Caldwell was a member of Sharon Lodge #136, F&AM, for over 50 years, and he attended Hiramsburg United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Lila Lee Reed Caldwell, whom he married August 27, 1946, and who died March 6, 2002; one granddaughter, Lisa Lyn Anderson; and one sister, Evelyn Ruggles.
Surviving are his children, Linda Kay Anderson of Byesville, Gary Edwin (Mary) Caldwell of Caldwell, Janet Lee (Tracey) Schmelzenbach of Caldwell, Sherry Ann (Steve) Roe of Sarahsville, and Jay Dee (Gloria) Caldwell of Caldwell; one sister, Anna Mae Givens of Ashland; one brother, Harold (Thelma) Caldwell of Mt. Vernon; 13 grandchildren, Lori Jane Boyd, Troy Robert Anderson, Scott Tracy, Chad Michael, Jared Lee and Todd Aaron Schmelzenbach, Mandy Lynn Butler, Jason Edwin Caldwell, Jana Lee Smith, Jodi Ann Roe, Jacob Dewey Caldwell, Jessalin Danielle Maximo, and Bradley Derek Caldwell; several great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandson; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was always friendly and had a smile on his face.
Friends may call Friday, March 17, 2017, from 2-8PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell, where a Masonic service will observed at 7:30PM. The funeral service will be observed Saturday, March 18th at 11AM with Rev. Keith Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at Hiramsburg Cemetery.
