Obituary for Clarice Leone Barnhouse
Clarice Leone Barnhouse, age 100, formerly of Belle Valley, Ohio, died Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at Summit Acres Nursing Home, Caldwell, Ohio. She was born August 24, 1907, at the home of her grandparents on the Barnhouse farm southwest of Belle Valley with Dr. Frank Dew as attending physician. She was the daughter of the late Cora Barnhouse and J. Lawrence Moore. Leone lived most of her life in Belle Valley in the house built around 1912 by her grandfather, Harvey Barnhouse. The house is now owned by Shawn and Michelle Crow. She graduated from Belle Valley High School in 1926, and then from the Noble County Normal School. She began teaching kindergarten in Florence while rooming at the home of her cousin, Mrs. Elizabeth Barnhouse Fogle, and she taught grade school at Coal Ridge. Her teaching career was interrupted by a brief marriage to Robert Maple Hennen of Cadiz from November 26, 1930 to April 27, 1935. In 1942, she was hired by the Belle Valley School Board to teach third grade for the grand salary of $1000 per year. She continued to teach third grade in Belle Valley until her retirement. She graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in education from Muskingum College in 1956 after years of attending summer school. She was a life member of the Belle Valley United Methodist Church, a member of the Noble County Retired Teachers Association, and the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed spending her winters in Florida. Surviving are many cousins, including Kay Barnhouse Stout of Caldwell and Willard Dye 'Bud' (Alice) Barnhouse of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Friends may call Saturday, February 23, 2008, from 7-9PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell, where the funeral service will be held Sunday, February 24th at 2PM with Pastor Susan Hyland officiating.
