Obituary for Clarence B. Bates
Clarence B. Bates, age 83, of Sarahsville, Ohio, died Monday, November 6, 2006, at Marietta Memorial Hospital. He was born November 20, 1922, in Archers Ridge, Noble County, Ohio, son of the late Elvin and Mary King Bates. He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the European Theatre of Operations in Germany and France. Mr. Bates owned and operated a family farm, did construction work for most of his life, and was Free Methodist by faith. He was a member of the Byesville VFW; a member and past post commander of the Belle Valley American Legion; and a member of the DAV, AMVETS, and the Caldwell Eagles. He enjoyed playing his guitar, and was a member of the Mid Ohio Valley Music Association, and he was a musician in the Clarence Bates and the Country Nite Owls Band. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Linda Bates Pangle Shuster, Margaret Bates Abbott Marlow, and Judith Ann Bates; three sisters; two brothers; 4 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Elizabeth Smith Bates, whom he married July 5, 1952; his children, Gerald L. Bates of Sarahsville, Beverly J. Knepper of Canton, David W. (Linda) Bates of North Carolina, Diane L. (Jeff) Fogle of Harriettsville, Melissa K. (Jeff) McAfee of Cambridge, and Brian D. Bates of Caldwell; his siblings, Dighton (Helen) Bates of Zanesville, Olen Bates of Indiana, Orlen Bates of Akron, Blanche Feldner of Carlisle, Ronald Bates of Cleveland, and Anna Murrey of Canton; 28 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends may call Thursday, November 9, 2006, from 2-4 and 6-8PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, Caldwell, where funeral services will be held Friday, November 10 at 11AM with Pastor Tim Doudna officiating. Burial will follow at Village View Cemetery, Sarahsville, with military graveside services conducted by the Noble County Veterans Services Organization.
