Arlene Mae Winkler, 96, of Caldwell, Ohio, died February 17, 2025 at Summit Acres. She was born December 18, 1928, near Sardis, Ohio, the second daughter of Fred and Daisy Rufener Bauman. Arlie, as she was called by her family, graduated in 1946 from Hannibal High School. In 1948, she married Lawrence Winkler and they lived on the family farm where Arlie was born. After the home was destroyed by fire in 1962, they rebuilt, but when Lawrence had an opportunity to get a full-time job with the Soil Conservation Service in Caldwell, they sold the farm and moved to Sunset Hills. Arlene was a people person. She and Wink stayed in touch with family and friends through visits and phone calls. For 50 years, the Winklers sent out their annual Christmas letter and looked forward to receiving notes and cards back.Arlene loved living at the Senior Apartments. She stayed busy volunteering, delivering newspapers, attending church services in the chapel, playing cards, and exercising on the walking track. Arlene suffered from arthritis her whole life. However, macular degeneration in her last few years really limited her activity. Her greatest joy became listening to music. She loved to say, “More moosic,”, just like her granddaughters used to say to her when they were little.
In addition to her parents, Arlene was preceded in death by Lawrence ,her husband of 56 years; Julie Brown, her granddaughter; and Marilyn Ensinger and Janis Miller, her sisters.
She is survived by Judy and Jon Brown, her daughter and son-in-law; Jody Glance, her granddaughter; Julia and Elizabeth Glance, her great granddaughters; Delores Straub and Janet Straub, her sisters; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Friday, February 21, 2025, from 11AM-1PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell, where the service will follow visitation at 1PM with Ken Perkins officiating. Interment will be observed Saturday, February 22nd at 11AM at Zion Memorial Gardens in Hannibal, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Zion United Church of Christ, c/o Clyde Gilmore, 43738 Long Ridge Road, Clarington, Ohio, 43915, First Presbyterian Church, 532 North Street, Caldwell, Ohio, 43724, or a charity of one’s choice.
The family would like to thank Kelly Bettinger and Brenda Mills of the senior apartments and Karen Hickman, Sharon Davis, and Chrissy Thompson. Their care and love allowed her to remain in her apartment until her unfortunate fall in October.
